Academic Word – Crucial

Without a doubt, a large vocabulary is important when you are learning English as a Second Language (ESL). One way to learn new words that are very useful for school is to study the words on the Academic Word List. This is a list of words developed by Dr. Averil Coxhead, and they are high frequency words used in academic settings such as a university or college.

If you plan on studying at an English university or college, it’s a good idea to learn these words! However, even if you do not, they are good words to know because a large English vocabulary will definitely help your ability to read in English.

To help you learn the word crucial, which is on the Academic Word List, I’ve created a short podcast (under two minutes!) to help with pronunciation and hear some example sentences using the word crucial in context.

Exit Sign on highway No Re-Entry
It’s crucial that you understand this sign if you decide to take this exit.

Maybe the first sentence in this post would be better if it said: Without a doubt, a large vocabulary is crucial when you are learning English as a Second Language (ESL). 🙂
